Interior design courses are typically offered in various universities and colleges. Interior Design is a fusion of techniques and technology. It is about an inventive and original approach to the design of spaces and how people occupy and use these spaces.

Interior design courses are generally aimed at the interaction of technology with different ideas of design. Courses on these field joins together the innate creativity of designers with the practical knowledge they will need to achieve a secure grasp in the employment market.

Most design schools and interior design colleges offer associate diploma courses, diploma courses, degree and graduate courses in interior design. All of which will be useful in undertaking a profession in the interior design field.

Associate Diploma Courses are basically a beginner’s course in interior design. It allows students to gain a solid base and understanding on the subject of interior design, learning information that is more than enough to enable him to consider taking on small clients and giving advice to friends and family. These associate diploma courses also provides some flexibility, allowing the student to continue into the more complete diploma course on interior design.

Diploma Courses are intensive vocational courses, offering students a more in depth knowledge on interior design and a broader range of subjects. This course in interior design allows the student to learn more than just the fundamentals of design.

A Degree Course in interior design is a full time course on the subject. Finishing this course would usually mean that a graduate gets either a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree in Interior Design. Taking up a degree course on interior design will typically take three years to finish.

Studying interior design usually exposes the students to these topics:

-Drafting techniques for working drawings and introduction to standards, codes, ink and lettering.
-3 dimensional sketching and illustration techniques
-Design principles: space planning, color, creative expression, product information and design process.
-Design of living spaces: kitchens, baths and other spaces.
-Perspective sketch techniques, plan and elevation graphics with emphasis on composition, lighting and texture, material representation and graphic charts
-Fundaments of building codes and systems in relation to interiors. Includes electrical, plumbing, ventilating, heating, cooling and construction products and techniques.
-Creative design techniques and presentation, includes presentation boards, 3d models, computer aided design presentation software and techniques and the using color media.
-Planning of interiors for residential and commercial projects, including design considerations, schematic plans and application of codes.
-Tours to introduce samples of architecture and interior spaces.
-Using AutoCAD as a tool for design.
-History of Architecture and Interiors
-Selection, computation and specification of interior design materials for residential, institutional and commercial designs.
-Lighting of interiors for residential, commercial and institutional designs.
-Office systems, principles and procedures needed for professional organization of an interior design project, starting from client contact to final billing and collection.
-Methods and principles governing the restoration and preservation of structures.
-Contemporary furniture for installation in residential, institutional and commercial spaces.
-Production of three dimensional architectural models of interiors, integrating color and composition
-Design solutions for residential spaces, including new construction and remodeling
-Design for health related fields
-Design for hospitality, commercial and institutional spaces.
-Design Competitions and Exhibits
-Practicum for Interior Design
-Independent Studies
