School of Interior Design

New England is known for the literary giants who were residents or once resided in this great region – Anne Sexton, Sylvia Plath, Henry David Thoreau, and Ralph Waldo Emerson all had ties with New England. However, people will soon acknowledge New England for its multi-dimensional interior design degree offered in Mount Ida College.

As their saying goes, “From Potential to Achievement,” the interior design degree in Mount Ida College is tasked to nurture students in a program accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accredited, formerly known as FIDER. Their aim is to develop the technical skills necessary to not only improve the appearance and atmosphere of interior spaces, but to only enhance the quality of life. Also, the program is responsible to instruct students about the proper building codes and regulations that lay the groundwork for some of the best interior design ever conceived.

Learning Objectives

Below is a list of some of the concepts and area rudiment in interior design that graduates from the program of Mount Ida College will be aware and knowledgeable of:

• History – The study of interior design starts with the development of interiors, art, architecture, and furniture of different cultures from all over the world.
• Communication skills – students will be able to effectively share their ideas through written, oral, and other means of communication. Also included in this area are technical drawings, standards, building material, and construction system.
• Basic creative arts – Every interior design begins with the fundamentals in art which includes the creative arts and craft, as well as three dimension fundamentals.
• Theory – From the spatial composition, color, and the architecture to the design concepts and current trends, the knowledge of design theory is a must for all students to be acquainted with before undertaking the actual practice of interior design.
• Critical Analysis – A keen eye for interior design extend beyond the room and the space students are tackling because they will be asked to use critical thinking to solve design-related problems – common in actual design practice as experienced by professionals.

Program Options

Prospective students can choose from a variety of interior design degrees to pursue. Those pursuing their graduate studies can take up a specialty in design such as Furniture Design, Lighting Design, Environmental Design, and Architecture, to name a few.

Once the students graduate from the interior design program of Mount Ida College, their next objective is to register with a licensure board so they can practice interior design professionally. In order to do so, they should participate in the IDEP or Interior Design Experience Program to immerse themselves into different tasks and responsibilities in relation to their field. After two years worth of experience in the program, they can take the three-part exam from the NCIDQ, also known as the National Council for the Interior Design Qualification.
