Completion of a baccalaureate program or getting a bachelor’s degree will usually make a graduate academically qualified to become a professional in the field of interior design. Some institutions offer diplomas in interior design while some community colleges and technical institutes offer certificates in interior design.

Certificate programs usually take about two years to finish, with certificates being granted upon completion of the course. These are mostly not credited and such trainings are usually for support staff at a design firm and not for a full fledged interior designer. Since there is no industry set standard for interior design in the United States, a qualification exam (NCIDQ exam) is usually taken after six years of design experience. Passing this exam is the standard method of recognition for professionals in this field.
