Typical Japanese apartments are quite small and inflexible. Here’s a renovation project handled by Bakoko which updates typical Japanese interior design and gives it a more contemporary minimalist and flexible twist. The apartment is done predominantly in white with splashes of reds and greens; red being a lucky color in most oriental cultures. The photo above shows a study area where minimalist chairs are used and a study table for two is built into a recessed area in a wall.

Apartments are usually considered challenging subjects of interior design because of the lack of space and the difficulty with which one can change the apartment architectural design. Here’s a remarkably minimalist Norwegian interior design of an apartment from Norway-based Gudmundur Jonsson. The photo above shows the dining area and the kitchen. The counter has ample space for a preparation area which doubles up as a dining table. The covered cabinets keep the kitchen without visible clutter, which is quite important in a small apartment.

Japanese interior design is an exercise in control and attention to details. The beauty is always in how simple and functional each design element is and how harmonious the overall effect will be to the people who will appreciate the design. Here is a Hong Kong apartment designed with Japanese influences by architecture and design firm, Philip Liao and Partners Limited. The photo above shows the entire living space, which is a little studio apartment. The clear glass walls seem to be the designer’s interpretation of tatami walls, dividing the room clearly but making the space as seamless as possible.

Here are a few of architectural and design firm, Stanic Harding's sleek interior design ideas for apartments. Above is a photo of a Darling Point Apartment which has spaces in the interiors where walls are curved. The idea is to use the ambiguity of the architecture to create a living space that is flexible and attractive. The living room above shows a very beautiful cityscape view, with the sofa facing towards the windows instead of towards the walls. The wall is lined with curved bookshelves and cabinets, underlining the simplicity of the interior design.

Apartments may be a bit more challenging because of the usual restrictions in space and the fact that most apartment units have restrictions on what can be changed and remodeled within the house. Here are a couple of interior design apartments ideas from Canada-based K2Ld. Above is a photo of the living and dining area of a Westwood apartment. Using low but comfortable-looking furniture minimizes the need for space, thus opening up the area a bit more to the eyes. The apartment itself was designed to have as little partitions as possible.
